Our Lady of the Elms:
A Century of Faith and Learning
Founded in 1923 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, Our Lady of the Elms School was established as a place where young women could grow in faith, knowledge, and service. Rooted in the Dominican tradition of prayer, study, community, and ministry, the Elms has flourished for over a century, educating students from preschool through high school. Over the decades, the campus has expanded, programs have evolved, and traditions have deepened—yet the school’s mission remains steadfast: to inspire excellence, nurture leadership, and cultivate a lifelong commitment to learning and service.
Rooted in Faith: The Legacy of the Akron Dominicans
The legacy of the Akron Dominicans is one of faith, service, and a steadfast commitment to education. Founded in the early 20th century as a branch of the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, New Jersey, the Akron Dominicans brought the Dominican charism of prayer, study, community, and ministry to Northeast Ohio. Their vision led to the establishment of Our Lady of the Elms School in 1923, creating a place where generations of students could grow in knowledge, deepen their faith, and serve others. For more than a century, the Akron Dominicans have shaped lives through their dedication to learning, social justice, and the belief that education is a path to both personal and community transformation.
